Expanding Access to Testing and Treatment

Access to HIV testing and treatment
As part of the company's efforts to fight HIV/AIDS in the developing world, Abbott has made rapid HIV tests and its HIV medicines broadly available at significantly reduced prices or at no profit in the developing world; for more information click here.

Josphat and Elizabeth's Story
Josphat and his wife, Elizabeth, received HIV therapy with Abbott’s HIV medicines through a local treatment program in Kenya. Both have dedicated their lives to helping others affected by HIV; Elizabeth helps with home visits to HIV patients, and Josphat is a leader of a local HIV patient support group. A few years ago, Josphat suggested to his doctor that HIV-positive patients could be effectively trained to serve as community health workers. This approach proved successful, and now Abbott is supporting the expansion of the program to other communities.

Special focus on pediatric HIV treatment

The treatment needs of children have always been an integral part of Abbott's access programs. Abbott's PIs are both available in liquid formulations to provide flexible dosing for children, at the lowest price of any PI liquid formulation in Africa, including both branded and generic PIs. Abbott is currently developing a lower-strength pediatric tablet of its new lopinavir/ritonavir formulation to provide enhanced dosing flexibility for treating children.

Abbott and the Abbott Fund also support philanthropic programs targeting critical areas of need for children affected by HIV/AIDS; to find out more about these programs click here.
